War Of the Bleeding Sun - Warhammer 40k Narrative Event in Winchester - 2026

War of the Bleeding Sun – A Day of Narrative Warfare

On Saturday, players from across the country descended upon the Winchester Royal Hotel for War of the Bleeding Sun, our largest narrative Warhammer 40,000 event to date.

Hosted by Mythic Tabletop Games, the event saw 40 players battle across the seven worlds of the Dashanta System in a full day of immersive, story-driven gaming. Taking place in Winchester Royal hotel's atmospheric wooden-beamed hall, players fought beneath the shadow of a dying star as the fate of an entire Imperial system hung in the balance.

A Living Story

Unlike a traditional tournament, War of the Bleeding Sun was built around a branching narrative campaign. Throughout the day, players fought across five planets and two moons, each represented by its own bespoke battlefield complete with unique environmental rules and objectives.

At the centre of the conflict was the mystery of the Bleeding Sun—a stellar anomaly threatening to destroy the entire Dashanta System. Hidden across each world were ancient technological nodes whose secrets could potentially save the system, or doom it forever.

The event's narrative was written exclusively for Mythic Tabletop Games by Black Library author Neil Andrew Miller, with the story evolving throughout the day based on the results achieved on the battlefield.

Every victory mattered.

Every world mattered.

And as the rounds progressed, the story changed in response to the actions of the players.

Bringing the Story to Life

A particularly memorable feature of the event was the inclusion of live actors portraying key characters from the unfolding story.

Rather than simply reading mission briefings, players received updates from representatives of the Imperium and other major figures involved in the Dashanta crisis. These appearances helped blur the line between gaming event and immersive campaign experience, adding an extra level of drama as the fate of the system became increasingly uncertain.

As the day progressed and reports arrived from across the system, players watched the narrative unfold in real time.

Incredible Tables and Immersive Battlefields

One of the highlights of the event was undoubtedly the gaming tables themselves.

Each planet and moon of the Dashanta System was represented by a fully themed battlefield, from industrial forge worlds and sprawling hive cities to frozen mining worlds and deadly irradiated wastelands.

The unique planetary rules added an extra layer of narrative flavour to every game. Environmental hazards, dangerous terrain, and world-specific effects created memorable moments throughout the day and helped each battlefield feel distinct.

The feedback from players was overwhelmingly positive, with many commenting on how much the themed tables and narrative mechanics enhanced the experience.

Imperium Falls

Despite the desperate efforts of Imperial commanders, the enemies of mankind ultimately proved victorious.

Across the seven worlds of the Dashanta System, Imperial forces suffered setback after setback as xenos invaders, heretics and other enemies seized control of the ancient technologies hidden beneath the planets.

By the end of the final round, the enemies of the Imperium had secured overall victory and determined the final outcome of the campaign.

In true grimdark fashion, the fate of Dashanta was sealed.

The system fell.

The sun consumed everything.

And the galaxy grew a little darker.

A Story Written for the Players

At the heart of War of the Bleeding Sun was an original narrative campaign written exclusively for the event by Black Library author Neil Andrew Miller.

Unlike a traditional tournament setting, the story evolved throughout the day in response to player victories and defeats, with the fate of the Dashanta System hanging in the balance. As Imperial forces and their enemies battled across seven unique worlds, the narrative branched and adapted, ensuring that every result mattered.

Reflecting on the event after the dust had settled, Neil said:

"It was a huge amount of fun writing the story for the event, so I'm glad everybody enjoyed it as much as they did. The more narrative based 40k events there are, the better, as far as I'm concerned. I'm already cooking up ideas for a sequel!"

With the response from players being overwhelmingly positive, and the author himself already considering what comes next, the story of the Dashanta System may not be over just yet.

Celebrating the event

At the conclusion of the event, players gathered for a substantial prize ceremony.

Every member of the victorious faction received prizes, while additional awards recognised outstanding achievements throughout the day.

Awards included categories such as:

  • Best Sportsmanship

  • Best Miniature / Unit

  • Best Army

  • Narrative Achievements

  • Faction and Campaign Awards

The prize pool was one of the largest we have ever assembled and helped ensure the day ended with plenty of celebrations regardless of which side players fought for.

Thank You

Events like this are only possible because of the incredible support of our community.

A huge thank you goes to every player who attended, rolled dice, embraced the narrative, and helped create so many memorable moments throughout the day.

Thank you also to Neil Andrew Miller for creating the story that formed the foundation of the campaign, to our actors (Josh!) who helped bring the setting to life, and to everyone who contributed terrain; Hampshire Hammers & Winchester Rouge Traders, and support behind the scenes (Alex!).

War of the Bleeding Sun was everything we hoped it would be: immersive, cinematic, competitive, and above all fun.

The Dashanta System may have fallen.

But the stories created there will be remembered for a long time to come.
